Luis Tejerina, specialist of the Social Protection and Health Division of the Inter-American Development Bank, highlighted the achievements and challenges that Digital Health has experienced in the region during the pandemic.<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Luis Tejerina, health specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), conducted an interview for the March issue of Digital Health Latin America Magazine. During the interview, Tejerina explained the challenges faced by Digital Health in the Latin American context, and highlighted the need to develop digital policies and agendas to impact the population and achieve digital transformation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

\"It is important to note that when the pandemic began, we were already lagging behind in digital issues,\" he explained. He also acknowledged that less than 35% of the countries in the Latin American and Caribbean region have regulations that support the use of electronic medical records, or that only 45% of households have only mobile broadband. The possible solution proposed by Tejerina is that governments need to invest heavily.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Regarding the challenges and achievements of digital health in the Latin American and Caribbean region, he explains that: \"there are studies that show that the electronic medical record improves the quality of service, increases adherence to clinical areas, eliminates the duplication of unnecessary tests and avoids adverse effects of medications\". He also explained that the use of Artificial Intelligence can prevent deaths, for example, caused by sepsis, as it has achieved mortality reduction rates of 25% in hospitals in Brazil. On the other hand, he stressed that telemedicine has sufficient evidence to determine that its use has similar or better results than traditional care, despite its limitations.<\/p>

The challenges identified by Tejerina are the development of digital health agendas, as well as legal considerations and the implementation of common interoperability standards. \"Solving these problems will lead us to a secure and digital future in the healthcare segment in Latin America.<\/p>

53% of the countries in the region have some kind of Digital Health strategy, however, roles and responsibilities must be defined with all the participating actors, whether they are health authorities, the private sector or patients. Tejerina explains the need to articulate three strategic lines: setting the north in terms of objectives, making available all the infrastructure to set up the digital services strategy and the strategy itself.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Luis Tejerina, especialista de la Divisi\u00f3n de Protecci\u00f3n Social y Salud del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, resalt\u00f3 los logros y los retos que ha atravesado la Salud Digital en la regi\u00f3n durante la pandemia. Luis Tejerina, especialista en salud en el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID), realiz\u00f3 una entrevista para Revista Salud Digital Latinoam\u00e9rica, en su edici\u00f3n de marzo.  En dicha entrevista, Tejerina explic\u00f3 y plante\u00f3 los desaf\u00edos que enfrenta la Salud Digital en el contexto latinoamericano, y resalt\u00f3 la necesidad de desarrollar pol\u00edticas y agendas digitales para impactar a la poblaci\u00f3n y lograr la transformaci\u00f3n digital. “Es importante notar que cuando comenz\u00f3 la pandemia ya ven\u00edamos con un rezago en temas digitales,” explic\u00f3. Tambi\u00e9n reconoci\u00f3 que menos del 35% de los pa\u00edses de la regi\u00f3n de Latinoam\u00e9rica y el Caribe cuentan con normativas que respalden el uso de la historia cl\u00ednica electr\u00f3nica, o que solamente el 45% de los hogares cuentan con solamente banda ancha m\u00f3vil. La posible soluci\u00f3n que propone Tejerina es que se requieren fuertes inversiones de parte de los gobiernos. En cuanto a los retos y logros de la Salud Digital en la regi\u00f3n latinoamericana y del caribe, explica que: “hay estudios que nos muestran que la historia cl\u00ednica electr\u00f3nica, mejora la calidad del servicio, incrementa la adherencia a \u00e1reas cl\u00ednicas, elimina la duplicaci\u00f3n de ex\u00e1menes innecesarios y evita efectos adversos de los medicamentos\u201d. Tambi\u00e9n explic\u00f3 que el uso de Inteligencia Artificial puede evitar muertes, por ejemplo, causadas por sepsis, pues ha logrado tasas de reducci\u00f3n de mortalidad en un 25% en hospitales de Brasil. Por otra parte, resalt\u00f3 que la telemedicina cuenta con evidencia suficiente para determinar que su uso tiene resultados similares o mejores a la atenci\u00f3n tradicional, a pesar de sus limitantes. Los retos que identifica Tejerina son el desarrollo de agendas digitales de salud, as\u00ed como consideraciones legales y la implementaci\u00f3n de est\u00e1ndares comunes de interoperabilidad. “Resolver estos problemas nos van a llevar hacia un futuro seguro y digital en el segmento de salud en Am\u00e9rica Latina\u201d. El 53% de los pa\u00edses de la regi\u00f3n tiene alg\u00fan tipo de estrategia de Salud Digital, sin embargo, se deben definir roles y responsabilidades con todos los actores participantes, ya sean las autoridades sanitarias, el sector privado o los pacientes. Tejerina explica la necesidad de articular tres l\u00edneas estrat\u00e9gicas: marcar el norte en cuanto a los objetivos, hacer disponible toda la infraestructura para montar la estrategia de servicios digitales y la estrategia en s\u00ed misma.
