Through holographic technology, a group of students and a professor from UNAM, performed a shoulder surgery with the remote support of a specialist in a hospital in France. <\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

UNAM professor Michell Ruiz Suarez, MSc. and specialist in orthopedics, participated with his team of students in a surgery that used teleassistance techniques, through the use of lenses to obtain a holographic image of the patient and the support of an external specialist. Ruiz Suarez explained that the procedure used Microsoft technology, specifically HoloLens 2, intelligent glasses for mixed reality and Dynamics 365 Remote Assist, a platform for connecting with specialists remotely and in real time.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In this way it was possible for the students to perform a shoulder surgery with remote assistance through holographic and mixed reality technology, the first in Mexico. The surgery was performed in December 2020, under the direction of Thomas Gr\u00e9gory, a French doctor who was contacted thanks to this technology from the Avvicenne Hospital in France.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Ruiz Suarez explained that the technology of the mixed reality glasses allows the reconstruction of the patient's bone system. This opens up the opportunity to perform surgery simulations, or to perform precise operations in real time, as the UNAM students did. \"What we do is to project, virtually, the patient's bone structure, which is done from a CT scan. What we do is process the images in the computers, upload the files and, through applications, transform the two-dimensional images into three-dimensional ones and, finally, into a hologram,\" explained the professor.<\/p>

This technology is also important in the process of specialization and education of doctors and future doctors, since it involves real situations with the support of external specialists. \"Continuing medical education is costly, as it used to involve traveling to specialized centers and at times, having to go on waiting lists; however, the pandemic has shown us that what this does is to shorten the limitations to have access to the best education at all times,\" explained the orthopedic specialist.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In addition to their usefulness, the application of these technologies does not require large infrastructure or equipment. Simply the use of the glasses and a stable internet connection within the hospital will be necessary to enable remote surgical assistance by a specialist.<\/p>

A trav\u00e9s de tecnolog\u00eda hologr\u00e1fica, un grupo de estudiantes y un docente de la UNAM, realizaron una cirug\u00eda de hombro con el apoyo remoto de un especialista en un hospital de Francia. El docente de la UNAM, Michell Ruiz Su\u00e1rez, maestro en ciencias y especialista en ortopedia, particip\u00f3 junto a su equipo de alumnos en una cirug\u00eda que cont\u00f3 con t\u00e9cnicas de teleasistencia, a trav\u00e9s de la utilizaci\u00f3n de lentes para obtener la imagen hologr\u00e1fica del paciente y el apoyo de un especialista externo. Ruiz Suarez, explic\u00f3 que el procedimiento utiliz\u00f3 tecnolog\u00eda de Microsoft, espec\u00edficamente HoloLens 2, anteojos inteligentes para realidad mixta y Dynamics 365 Remote Assist, plataforma para conectar con especialistas de manera remota y en tiempo real. De esta forma fue posible que los alumnos realizaran una cirug\u00eda de hombro con asistencia remota a trav\u00e9s de tecnolog\u00eda hologr\u00e1fica y de realidad mixta, la primera en M\u00e9xico. La cirug\u00eda fue realizada en diciembre de 2020, bajo la direcci\u00f3n de Thomas Gr\u00e9gory m\u00e9dico franc\u00e9s que se contact\u00f3 gracias a esta tecnolog\u00eda desde el Hospital Avvicenne en Francia. Ruiz Su\u00e1rez, explic\u00f3 que la tecnolog\u00eda de los anteojos de realidad mixta permite la reconstrucci\u00f3n del sistema \u00f3seo del paciente. Esto abre la oportunidad para realizar simulaciones de cirug\u00edas, o hacer operaciones precisas en tiempo real, como lo hicieron los estudiantes de la UNAM. \u201cLo que hacemos es proyectar, de manera virtual, la estructura \u00f3sea del paciente que se hace a partir de una tomograf\u00eda. Lo que hacemos es procesar las im\u00e1genes en las computadoras, se suben los archivos y a trav\u00e9s de aplicaciones transforman las im\u00e1genes bidimensionales, a tridimensionales y, finalmente, un holograma\u201d, explic\u00f3 el docente. Esta tecnolog\u00eda es importante tambi\u00e9n en el proceso de especializaci\u00f3n y educaci\u00f3n de los m\u00e9dicos y futuros m\u00e9dicos, ya que plantea situaciones reales con apoyo de especialistas externos. \u201cLa educaci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica continua es costosa, pues implicaba viajar a centros especializados y se ten\u00eda, a veces, que entrar a listas de espera; sin embargo, la pandemia nos vino a mostrar que esto lo que hace es acortar las limitaciones para tener acceso a la mejor educaci\u00f3n en todo momento\u201d, explic\u00f3 el especialista en ortopedia. El docente de la UNAM tambi\u00e9n consider\u00f3 las posibles mejoras que se pueden a\u00f1adir a este tipo de sistemas, para sacar mayor provecho de las tecnolog\u00edas: \u201cel siguiente paso ser\u00e1 la navegaci\u00f3n hologr\u00e1fica, lo que implica que no solo las im\u00e1genes dar\u00e1n un feedback en tiempo real, y ser\u00e1n capaces de captar nuestra posici\u00f3n para hacer las correcciones necesarias\u201d, explic\u00f3. Adem\u00e1s de su utilidad, la aplicaci\u00f3n de estas tecnolog\u00edas no requiere de gran infraestructura o equipo. Simplemente la utilizaci\u00f3n de los lentes y una conexi\u00f3n a internet estable dentro del hospital ser\u00e1n necesarios para permitir la asistencia remota quir\u00fargica de un especialista. En cuanto al desarrollo tecnolog\u00edas de asistencia remota, en M\u00e9xico existen diferentes opciones de asistencia virtual para que instituciones educativas apliquen t\u00e9cnicas de teleasistencia y telemedicina.
