The implementation of new health information systems (HIS) requires training of health care personnel and a major digital literacy strategy. The study, \u201cAn Education Framework for Effective Implementation of a Health Information System: Scoping Review,\u201d published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research by Canadian researchers and clinicians, aimed to \u201cunderstand the most effective educational strategies and approaches to enable health care providers to optimally use an HIS.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The researchers define HIS as \u201ca system designed to integrate data collection, processing, and reporting and the use of health information to influence policy making and improve health service effectiveness and efficiency.\u201d These systems have been proposed in an organizational approach, seeking quality transformation in health services to provide greater patient safety and also reduce health care costs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

One of the HIS application objectives is to facilitate the exchange of health information between professionals, so that the medical care provided is comprehensive. However, there are several challenges for its implementation, such as the staff\u00b4s lack of familiarity in the adoption of digital technologies, so it is important to educate healthcare providers at each level of care and in all areas of the health system, and thus take full advantage of the HIS and apply the technologies efficiently.<\/p>

The review conducted by the Canadian researchers applied a search method for articles and studies on education and HIS. They searched Ovad MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, EBSCO Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and EBSCO Education Resources Information Center. The selected studies were then systematically reviewed and analyzed through a qualitative thematic analysis.<\/p>

A total of 3,539 studies were reviewed and finally 17 were included for final data extraction. \u201cThe literature on the most effective approaches to enable health care providers to optimally use an HIS emphasized the importance of investing in engaging and understanding learners in the clinical context, maximizing the transfer of learning to care, and designing continuous and agile evaluation to meet the emerging demands of the clinical environment,\u201d they explain in the publication.<\/p>

The articles met the following criteria:<\/p>

  1. Examined educational approaches (ie, classroom, instructor-led, web-based training, e-learning, and hybrid learning).<\/li>
  2. Discussed HIS systems (EMR, EHR, Clinical Information system, etc).<\/li>
  3. Discussed the effectiveness of different approaches in educating staff to use the HIS.<\/li>
  4. Described an educational program related to HIS.<\/li>
  5. Ensured education be conducted in a hospital setting.<\/li><\/ol>

    The three main themes across the various educational approaches reviewed were: investing in engaging and understanding learners in the clinical context; maximizing the transfer of learning to care; and continuous, agile assessment designed to meet the emerging demands of the clinical environment.<\/p>

    \u201cThis study supports the development of an HIS learning framework that educators can use to guide the design and development of HIS education and training during and postimplementation,\u201d concluded the authors. El estudio: “Un marco educativo para la implementaci\u00f3n efectiva de un sistema de informaci\u00f3n de salud: revisi\u00f3n del alcance”, publicado en el Journal of Medical Internet Research realizado por investigadores y m\u00e9dicos canadienses, tuvo como objetivo \u201ccomprender las estrategias y enfoques educativos m\u00e1s efectivos para permitir que los proveedores de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica utilice de manera \u00f3ptima un SIS\u201d. Los investigadores definen un SIS como “un sistema dise\u00f1ado para integrar la recopilaci\u00f3n, el procesamiento y la presentaci\u00f3n de informes de datos y el uso de informaci\u00f3n de salud para influir en la formulaci\u00f3n de pol\u00edticas y mejorar la eficacia y eficiencia de los servicios de salud”. Estos sistemas han sido propuestos en un enfoque organizacional, buscando la transformaci\u00f3n de la calidad en los servicios de salud para brindar mayor seguridad al paciente y adem\u00e1s reducir los costos de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica. Uno de los objetivos de la aplicaci\u00f3n de los SIS, es facilitar el intercambio de informaci\u00f3n de salud entre profesionales, para que la atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica brindada sea integral. Sin embargo, existen diversos desaf\u00edos para su implementaci\u00f3n, como la poca familiarizaci\u00f3n de parte del personal en la adopci\u00f3n de tecnolog\u00edas digitales, por ello es importante educar a los proveedores de atenci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica en cada uno de los niveles de atenci\u00f3n y en todas las \u00e1reas del sistema de salud, y as\u00ed aprovechar los SIS al m\u00e1ximo y aplicar las tecnolog\u00edas de manera eficiente. La revisi\u00f3n realizada por los investigadores canadienses aplic\u00f3 un m\u00e9todo de b\u00fasqueda de art\u00edculos y estudios sobre educaci\u00f3n y SIS. Realizaron b\u00fasquedas en Ovad MEDLINE, Ovid Embase, EBSCO Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature y EBSCO Education Resources Information Center. Posteriormente los estudios seleccionados se revisaron y analizaron de forma sistem\u00e1tica a trav\u00e9s de un an\u00e1lisis tem\u00e1tico cualitativo. Los art\u00edculos cumplieron con los siguientes criterios: Examinaron los enfoques educativos (es decir, el aula, la capacitaci\u00f3n dirigida por un instructor, la capacitaci\u00f3n basada en la web, el aprendizaje electr\u00f3nico y el aprendizaje h\u00edbrido). Discutieron los sistemas de informaci\u00f3n en salud, registros m\u00e9dicos electr\u00f3nicos, sistema de informaci\u00f3n cl\u00ednica, etc. Discutieron la efectividad de diferentes enfoques para educar al personal en el uso del HIS. Describieron un programa educativo relacionado con HIS. Se asegur\u00f3 de que la educaci\u00f3n se llevara a cabo en un entorno hospitalario. Los tres principales temas en los distintos enfoques educativos revisados fueron: Invertir en involucrar y comprender a los alumnos en el contexto cl\u00ednico; maximizar la transferencia del aprendizaje al cuidado; y la evaluaci\u00f3n continua y \u00e1gil dise\u00f1ada para satisfacer las demandas emergentes del entorno cl\u00ednico. \u201cEste estudio apoya el desarrollo de un marco de aprendizaje de SIS que los educadores pueden usar para guiar el dise\u00f1o y desarrollo de la educaci\u00f3n y capacitaci\u00f3n de SIS durante y despu\u00e9s de la implementaci\u00f3n”, concluyeron los autores.
