Our matrix decomposition algorithm learns latent signatures of drugs and side effects that are both reproducible and biologically interpretable. We show the usefulness of our approach on 759 structurally and therapeutically diverse drugs and 994 side effects from all human physiological systems. Even another problem I could solve is avoiding medicine shortage. In addition to the benefits to end consumers of drugs, this algorithm would save a huge amount of money on pharmaceutical companies' investments to develop new drugs.<\/p><p>Alberto Paccanaro, Professor of Computational Biology at Royal Holloway, University of London, highlighted the relevance of this project: \u201cThere are several examples of medicines that had to be withdrawn from the market due to unknown side effects. latent features (or signatures) that encode the biological interplay between drugs and side effects,\u201d they explain in the Discussion section in the article.<\/p><p>The drugs were grouped according to their main anatomical, therapeutic and chemical classes, while side effects were grouped according to their organ and system classification categories in MedDRA (Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities).<\/p><p>The machine learning algorithm was designed so that pharmaceutical companies can create more accurate drugs and perhaps in less time, so it is sought to inform that industry first so that they know what are the most recurrent side effects in patients depending on the drugs.<\/p><p>The article published in Nature Communications is available for free at the En septiembre fue publicado el articulo: Predecir la frecuencia de los efectos secundarios de los medicamentos, en la revista Nature Communications. \u201cPresentamos un enfoque de aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico para predecir las frecuencias de los efectos secundarios de los medicamentos.&nbsp;Mostramos la utilidad de nuestro enfoque para f\u00e1rmacos de m\u00faltiples clases terap\u00e9uticas y efectos secundarios pertenecientes a todos los sistemas fisiol\u00f3gicos.&nbsp;Dada una peque\u00f1a cantidad de efectos secundarios determinados experimentalmente, nuestro m\u00e9todo predice las frecuencias de una gama m\u00e1s amplia de efectos secundarios desconocidos.&nbsp;Hasta donde sabemos, este es el primer m\u00e9todo computacional que aborda con \u00e9xito el problema de predecir la frecuencia de los efectos secundarios de los medicamentos\u201d. El prop\u00f3sito del este novedoso m\u00e9todo es predecir los efectos secundarios de los medicamentos para evitar riesgos en los pacientes que pueden llegar a ser letales. Incluso otra de las problem\u00e1ticas que podr\u00eda resolver es evitar el desabasto de algunos medicamentos.&nbsp; Adem\u00e1s de los beneficios a los consumidores finales de los medicamentos, este algoritmo lograr\u00eda ahorrar una enorme cantidad de dinero en las inversiones que realizan las compa\u00f1\u00edas farmac\u00e9uticas para desarrollar nuevos f\u00e1rmacos. Alberto Paccanaro, Profesor de Biolog\u00eda Computacional de Royal Holloway, en la Universidad de Londres, resalt\u00f3 la relevancia de este proyecto: \u201cExisten varios ejemplos de medicamentos que tuvieron que ser retirados del mercado debido a efectos secundarios desconocidos. Nuestro trabajo ayudar\u00e1 a desarrollar medicamentos m\u00e1s seguros para los pacientes.\u201d \u201cNuestro enfoque para predecir las frecuencias de los efectos secundarios de los medicamentos es utilizar un algoritmo de descomposici\u00f3n matricial que aprende un peque\u00f1o conjunto de caracter\u00edsticas latentes (o firmas) que codifican la interacci\u00f3n biol\u00f3gica entre los medicamentos y los efectos secundarios\u201d, explican en la secci\u00f3n de Discusi\u00f3n en el art\u00edculo. Los f\u00e1rmacos fueron agrupados en funci\u00f3n de sus principales clases anat\u00f3micas, terap\u00e9uticas y qu\u00edmicas, mientras que los efectos secundarios fueron agrupados seg\u00fan sus categor\u00edas de clasificaci\u00f3n de \u00f3rganos y sistemas en MedDRA (Medical&nbsp;Dictionary for Regulatory Activities). El algoritmo de aprendizaje autom\u00e1tico fue dise\u00f1ado para que las compa\u00f1\u00edas farmac\u00e9uticas puedan crear medicamentos m\u00e1s precisos y quiz\u00e1 en menor tiempo, por lo que se busca informar primero a dicha industria para que conozcan cuales son los efectos secundarios m\u00e1s recurrentes en los pacientes dependiendo de los medicamentos.
