Digital transformation strategy for the Spanish health system presented

The Analysis and Improvement of Hospital and Health Processes (AMPHOS) project is an initiative to improve the efficiency of the Spanish National Health System, in which hospital directors and managers participate.

The AMPHOS project began in 2011 thanks to the collaboration between hospital directors, who sought to delve into aspects related to improving the management and efficiency of the National Health System. In ten years, more than 300 managers, health professionals and patients have participated in the six editions of AMPHOS, which in turn have addressed various issues related to the health system, such as the generation of alliances in health, clinical management, among others.

This year, the document was published AMPHOS, The healthcare we want in 2025, an analysis of how the health system works in Spain and improvement plans. For six months, more than 200 participants built more than 50 proposals to achieve the health system that the country requires.

One of the strategic lines addressed by the document is digital transformation. In this section, it explains that in order to achieve the digital transformation of the health system, it is necessary to achieve a national consensus, which includes the 17 Regional Health Systems (SRS).

Then, it would be necessary to carry out economic planning, allocate and search for the necessary resources to carry out this strategy. And then design, develop or acquire the tools for its operation.

As for the technical aspects, the digital transformation should include digital identification mechanisms, interoperable electronic prescriptions between autonomous communities, analysis of clinical data through Artificial Intelligence, as well as measurement and comparison of health outcomes. In other words, tools that make management and decision-making a more agile and efficient task.

Another aspect indicated in the document is the need to implement a legal and contractual framework for the exercise of telemedicine and the provision of services through it.

Weeks after the completion of the report, the Government of Spain published the National Digital Health Strategy for 2021-2026, which coincides with the digital transformation objectives presented in the AMPHOS document.
