IMSS implements telemedicine in reference centers to care for minors undergoing cancer treatment

The Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) announced that it has implemented telemedicine services in the State Reference Centers for the Care of Boys and Girls with Cancer (ONCOCREAN).

The IMSS recently held the 84th meeting of the working group for the care of pediatric patients undergoing cancer treatment. At the event, the IMSS announced that it has managed to implement telemedicine services in the 35 ONCOCREAN throughout the country.

 

The objective of these actions is to provide highly specialized services to all children and adolescents undergoing cancer treatment at the IMSS and to establish closer contact between patients and medical personnel.

During the meeting, authorities and IMSS personnel participated, as well as the parents of minors in treatment. In this way, Dr. Enrique López Aguilar, head of the Oncology Care Coordination, explained that telemedicine will help the doctor make better decisions for the benefit of patients. This by having the support of specialists in the 35 OCOCREAN in the country, who, through a remote connection, will be able to support in the resolution of complex cases in pediatric oncology care.

Therefore, telemedicine in this context is applied in order for doctors to make decisions with greater academic and scientific support from IMSS oncologists throughout the country.

Likewise, the official indicated that they have carried out 60 telemedicine sessions with IMSS specialists, which has resulted in the improvement of patient care, after receiving 65 clinical cases in the IMSS and carrying out 15 training sessions in care. palliative care, Golden Hour, Early Warning Assessment Scale (EVAT), educational offer, among others. This strategy is part of a link between the IMSS Health Education Coordination and the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Tennessee, United States.

López Aguilar also highlighted that the implementation of telemedicine will offer better quality care for children with cancer. As well as the opportunity to apply the most recent advances in this type of treatment in real time and bring precision medicine closer to minors.

For his part, the head of the Division of Digital Services and Information for Digital Health Care, Isaac Mejía, announced that the oncology patient and treatment registration platform has 8,731 records, of which 40% are pediatric patients. The patients are distributed in 62 IMS hospitals, 15 High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE) and 47 Second Level hospitals.
